Anton Reicha: Andante for English Horn no. 2 in F major / Carl Nielsen: Wind Quintet, Op. 43 / Jacques Ibert: Trois Pièces Brèves / Paul Hindemith: Kammermusik, no. 2, Op. 24 V
The wind quintet—four woodwind instruments and one brass instrument (the horn)—is an ensemble that emerged around 1800, based on the model of Harmoniemusik (music for wind ensembles), which was very popular in Europe between the last third of the 18th century and the first third of the 19th century. The wind quintet was consolidated thanks to the Czech composer and flutist Anton Reicha, who integrated the principles of chamber music writing for wind instruments. The SenArts Wind Quintet, winners of the BBVA Montserrat Alavedra Chamber Music Award 2025, invite us on a journey through the wind quintet repertoire from Reicha to the 20th-century avant-gardes, with four works by fundamental composers of the repertoire that will reveal the many facets of this chamber music ensemble rich in colours and textures.
