The standard set by Bach in his Sonatas and Partitas has meant that writing for solo violin has challenged composers for over 300 years. Few have dares to follow this path, Niccolò Paganini being one exception whose virtuosic scores inspired disciples like Henryk Wieniawski, Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst and Eugène Ysaÿe... Yet Bach’s exploration remained in a class of its own.
